Why I Believe a Network Marketing (MLM) Business is the Best Kind of Business to Own!

It’s true that network marketing, also know as MLM or multi-level marketing, has gotten a bad rap because of poor business practices by some companies and marketers in the past, but don’t let that stop you from taking a good hard look at the business. I'd like to give you 7 reasons why a network marketing business is the best kind of home business to own.

Even financial greats like Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad) are now strong advocates of network marketing. Why? Because it works like nothing else to build income with very little start-up money.

1. Your chances for success are better in network marketing.

I am a college business professor, and through personal experience, as well as watching countless others, I have seen how much people will risk to start up and run a traditional “brick and mortar” business.

If you start a "traditional" business your odds of success are terrible! According to the SBA, at least 50% of small businesses fail in their first year and 95% fail within the first five years. So, after 5 years of 12-15 hour days, in debt up to your eyeballs, you only have a 5% chance of succeeding. For some reason that just doesn't do it for me.

Sure, a lot of people fail in network marketing, too. In MLM you will often find that 20% of the people are making 80% of the money. Do you know what? That is exactly the same as the church I belong to-- 20% of the people who attend are actively involved and do 80% of the work that needs to be done.

This dynamic has a name: Pareto's Principle or the 80/20 Rule: it says that 20 percent of something always are responsible for 80 percent of the results.

I'm not surprised that it is similar in network marketing. Some of the people who fail at network marketing are not motivated, some aren't cut out for self employment, some are in the wrong company for them, an many are just not properly trained. But a motivated and well trained person in a good company has a great chance of succeeding in their business. And believe me, lots of people are doing it.

The truth is, for those who really want to work at this business, 95% of all people who stay with their network marketing company for 10 years will reach the highest level of their company’s compensation plan, which is usually at least $500,000 annually.

I’ll take those odds any day!

2. The costs are much less to get into a network marketing business.

It is true that most network marketing companies ask for a monthly minimum order to keep an active distributor status. This is part of what keeps the machine running. It is part of the business operating costs. It may be as much as $200, depending on the company.

Now compare that to the costs of traditional business ownership, like rent, utilities, inventory, insurance, taxes, employees, marketing and advertising, and much more. I think you get the idea. I’ve seen people’s lives ruined and marriages fall apart all because people followed their dreams and started their own small business. And that was in a good economy!

The income needed to start and run a network marketing business is nominal compared to a traditional business! You don't have to be rich or go deep in debt to have your own home based network marketing business. It truly is an equalizer, giving everyone a fair chance at succeeding, no matter what the financial background or credit history is.

3. A network marketing business is simpler to run.

If you had your own business hopefully you could afford to hire an accountant and a secretary who would keep all your red-tape, paperwork, receipts, bookkeeping and such. If not, you would spend much of your time doing this.

With MLM, the company you are with handles most of the paperwork. You just need to keep your own financial records for your income taxes. This frees you up to spend your time and energy making money.

4. A network marketing business is easier to market and promote.

Most people who have their own "traditional" business are on their own when it comes to marketing and advertising. They usually try a little of everything to see if something will actually work. Often desperate business owners get taken in by slick sales people who promise results with their newest expensive advertising scheme.

A network marketing company has a proven marketing system that has been tested and used by many people. They will usually have their own marketing material that can be purchased at a lower cost because they can order in larger quantities.

5. With a home based network marketing business, taxes are on your side.

There are many deductions you can take with a home based network marketing business that will help you reduce your taxes.

On the other hand, the government (federal, state, and local) all seem to have it in for brick and mortar small businesses. And the way things are going today, it looks like it is only going to get worse for the traditional small business owner.

6. Network marketing is the future.

Some people say that network marketing or MLM is a pyramid scheme. That is not true. A pyramid scheme is illegal because it doesn't work. There is no product, and thus no value to it. The people at the bottom put money in but the value doesn't flow down to them. It is a scam because only the people who got in at the top make any money. Most of the people get ripped off. A good example of this is chain letters or the airplane game.

A pyramid the natural shape of structure for all businesses, including governments. A network marketing organization is no exception. Network marketing is just a new way to distribute and market goods and services. It is the way of the future. Even many huge traditional companies see this and are jumping on board. Network marketing is a very financially effecient way to run a business. Often you will will see very advanced cutting edge products become available to consumers only because of Network Marketing. I believe that network marketing will take over much of the retailing market in the next 10-20 years.

7. You can get the business training and tools you need to succeed in network marketing.

You don't need to know anything about business to be successful in MLM. Your company and your sponsors have done much of the work and research for you. They really want you to succeed and will do everything in their power to help you. Be sure to utilize those connections in your company.

Even if your company doesn't have very good tools and training programs in place, there is an excellent marketing system online that will teach you and give you all the tools you need to succeed with your network marketing business online, no matter what company you are with.

The network marketing system works. There are people in every network marketing company making money. But you have to know how to work the system to do well! And, of course, you have to do the work it takes to succeed.

Are you ready to give it a try? There are a lot of great network marketing companies out there. Do some research and try find the company that is the right fit for you. Then hook up with a good online marketing system to ensure your success.

Until you can educate yourself, learn to market yourself, and provide value, you are just not going to make it as a professional in this industry.

You have to step up to the plate and be a leader if you are an entrepreneur, ready to take action to make serious money. You want the people who are following you to be successful. People will only do what you have done. You have to lead by example.

Everyone online seems to be talking about Twitter these days! But what exactly is Twitter?

This is Twitter.com’s official definition:

“Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. People write short updates, often called "tweets" of 140 characters or fewer. These messages are posted to your profile or your blog, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search.”

It’s pretty simple really. Twitter is a site where you toss out short notes on the web that tell people what you are doing, feeling, thinking right now. It's a great way for busy people to keep in touch with friends and quickly broadcast information about where you are and what you're up to. Twitter is like an instant messaging blog that posts your conversations to the world (although you can also have private conversations.) You only have 140 spaces to write something-- so you have to keep it short.

With Twitter you have the option to link it to your mobile phone or to your instant messenger. This turns Twitter into a powerful mobile communication tool, since you can both send and receive updates on your phone, and stay in touch wherever you are.

What is the point? Well, if you’ve ever been hooked on Facebook, MySpace, email, blogging, one of the instant messaging clients, or even just spent a lot of time texting on your cell phone, you probably get the idea. It is a quick way to stay in touch, meet new people, and have some fun. It is like a mini blog.

Twitter isn’t just for personal use, it also has many applications for business use. It can be used to broadcast your company's latest news and blog posts. Twitter is good for interacting with your customers and employees. It can also enable easy internal group communication, feedback and collaboration.

For the entrepreneur and home worker, Twitter is becoming an important part of business promotion, web marketing, personal branding, and the social networking scene. It can be a great tool to get your messages out to a targeted audience and find new business leads.

There are some great twitter resources and tool out there on the web. One of my favorites is Tweetdeck.com. It organizes your Twitter information and gives your Twitter account an instant messenger style format. Firefox has some great Twitter add-ons. Another good Twitter tool is Tweetlater.com. You can send postdated tweets and auto reply tweets with this. There is also a Twitter download that you can add to your Apple/Mac Dashboard. You can also add twitter feed and wigets to your Facebook, Wordpress and Blogger blogs.

If you are going to be using Twitter to promote your business, here are a few important Twitter Business Tips:

1. Don’t blatantly promote. This is more of a passive promotion media. Blatant promotions turn your audience off.

2. Don’t let it take over and distract you from other important tasks. It’s easy to get too caught up in Twittering and lose track of time.

3. Don’t let it take the place of real communication in your life. Twitter is a communication tool not a communication replacement.

4. Do have fun! Share interesting non-business as well as business related tidbits of information that others might enjoy learning.

Here’s a secret-- network marketing (also know as MLM) is not a short term get rich quick business! Unfortunately many desperate distributors advertise and recruit for their company on that basis.

The network marketing business is a long term financial prospect, like an IRA or a CD. It is based on residual income-- an important part of wealth building in the long term, which is why people like Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad) and Donald Trump endorse it.

But network marketing needs to be funded as an investment in the beginning.

So, where does that put the majority of people who need money now and are looking for a home based business to supplement their immediate income, especially in today’s economy?

Well, most people end up dropping out of their network marketing company because they run out of the money they need to continue funding their business to get it to the point of solid residual income.

So, the million dollar question is “ how can the average person fund their network marketing (MLM) business now so they can stay in long enough to develop that long term residual income?”

A lot of people are down on network marketing businesses (also know as multi-level marketing or MLM), but I'd like to give you 7 reasons why a network marketing business is the best kind of home business to own.

1. Your chances for success are better in network marketing.

Yes, some people fail at it. In MLM or network marketing, you will often find that 20% of the people are making 80% of the money. Do you know what? That is exactly the same as the church I belong to-- 20% of the people who attend are actively involved and do 80% of the work that needs to be done.

I'm not surprised that it is similar in MLM. People are people. Some of the people who fail at network marketing are not motivated, some aren't cut out for self employment, some are in the wrong company for them, and some are just not properly trained. But a motivated and trained person in a good company has a great chance of succeeding in their business.

On the other hand, if you start a "traditional" business your odds of success are much lower. According to the SBA, at least 50% of small businesses fail in their first year and 95% fail within the first five years. So, after 5 years of 12 hour days, in debt up to your eyeballs, you only have a 5% chance of succeeding. For some reason that just doesn't do it for me.

2. The costs are much less to get into a network marketing business.

Most network marketing companies ask for a monthly minimum order to keep an active distributor status, it is true. This is part of what keeps the machine running. It is part of the business operating costs. It may be as much as $100, depending on the company.

Now compare that to the costs of traditional business ownership, like rent, utilities, inventory, insurance, taxes, employees, marketing and advertising, and much more. I think you get the idea.

You don't have to be rich or go deep in debt to have your own home based network marketing business. It truly is an equalizer, giving everyone a fair chance at succeeding, no matter what the financial background or credit history is.

3. A network marketing business is simpler to run.

If you had your own business hopefully you could afford to hire an accountant and a secretary who would keep all your red-tape, paperwork, receipts, bookkeeping and such. If not, you would spend much of your time doing this.

With MLM, the company you are with handles most of the paperwork. You just need to keep your own financial records for your income taxes. This frees you up to spend your time and energy making money.

4. A network marketing business is easier to market and promote.

Most people who have their own "traditional" business are on their own when it comes to marketing and advertising. They usually try a little of everything to see if something will actually work. Often desperate business owners get taken in by slick sales people who promise results with their newest expensive advertising scheme.

A network marketing company has a proven marketing system that has been tested and used by many people. They will usually have their own marketing material that can be purchased at a lower cost because they can order in larger quantities.

5. You get the business training you need to succeed network marketing.

You don't need to know anything about business to be successful in MLM. Your company has done all the work and research. They often hire the best marketers in the business to help them develop a training program because really want you to succeed and will do everything in their power to help you.

Some people say that network marketing or MLM is a pyramid scheme. That is not true. A pyramid scheme is illegal because it doesn't work. There is no product, and thus no value to it. The people at the bottom put money in but the value doesn't flow down to them. It is a scam because only the people who got in at the top make any money. Most of the people get ripped off. A good example of this is chain letters or the airplane game.

A pyramid the natural shape of structure for all businesses, including governments. A network marketing organization is no exception. The Real Truth about MLM and Network Marketing

Let me tell you the truth about MLM and network marketing-- most people who get involved in the business fail at it. The common figures tossed about on the Internet these days say that 95% of the people involved in MLM fail. I will argue that figure later, but for now, let’s just say maybe 9 out of every 10 people in network markting will fail.

There are many reasons people fail in MLM. They may have gotten involved in a bad company with a poor compensation plan. The products may not be top quality or anything special, so there is no demand for them. They may have received little training, poor training, or even no training at all. They might have been abandoned by their sponsor. They may have had the wrong expecataions-- thinking that the money will come pouring in without any effort on their part. But the biggest reason for MLM and network marketing failure is giving up!

On the other hand, compare this to traditional entrepreneurship, which has its problems, too. I am a college business professor, and I’ve had traditional businesses of my own, so I know the odd of success in starting up a traditional business are that 9 out of 10 new business will fail the first year. And then there is another 4 in 5 chance that those businesses who survived the first year will fail to make it to the fifth year.

Wow, when you consider the amount of money spent and/or borrowed to get those businesses running, that’s pretty scary! Add to that the time involved in running a small business. Often people put in 60+ hours a week, for less income than a job would give them. I’ve often seen dreamers who started their own traditional business find themselves crashing and burning with reality as they lost their credit, their homes, and in some cases marriages and families. Ouch!

I believe in entrepreneurship! I belive in the dream of having your own business-- no boss, no time card. Freedom to set your own hours, work where you want, live where you want, spend time with your family, travel and take time off whenever you want. Freedom. That’s what its all about! And it’s not traditional business that brings this freedom, it’s network marketing.

I’ll take the odds in MLM and network marketing any day! I’ll tell you why. If the 95% failure figure is correct, then it’s including all the people who just sign up to try the product, or decide for whatever reason they don’t want to work the business.

The truth is, for those who really want to work at this business, 95% of all people who stay with their network marketing company for 10 years will reach the highest level of their company’s compensation plan, which is usually at least $500,000 annually. And the income needed to start and run a network marketing business is nominal compared to a traditional business!

I’ll take those odds any day! You see, all you need to do is:

1) Find the best network marketing company you can.
2) Commit to learning and working your business.
3) And don’t quit.

Success in MLM and network marketing is a choice. Choose to do it!

MLM Scams

The old saying goes, “A few bad apples spoil the bunch.” It could not be more true when you are thinking about getting into MLM. There are so many legitimate opportunities that have been spoiled by some MLM scams giving the business opportunity a bad name. Yes, there are legitimate MLM opportunities out there, you just need to be able to tell the difference between the good businesses and the MLM scams.

MLM is a legitimate business model, but some people have chosen to create MLM scams from this model. You really can, with a lot of work, make good money with MLM, which is a multi-level marketing business model. Also known as network marketing, you have an upline and build a downline while selling unique services or products. The problem is, while this model is legitmate, there are a lot of people creating MLM scams and illegal schemes that have smeared the MLM name.

So, what are some common MLM scams? The most popular MLM scam is very much illegal, and it is has been around for the longest time. In a pyramid scheme, a company will offer large profits if you invest in their program. Do you actually sell the products? No. This is one of those MLM scams where the money is paid in without you ever seeing any money for the products.

Another one of the most common MLM scams is called a Ponzi scheme. This is similar to the pyramid scheme, but with one difference. With a Ponzi scheme there is not actually a product. The company promises you large returns if you invest with them, but they only take the investment to pay off the people who have been in the program longer.

With these type of MLM scams the promises sound legitimate, but the companies will most likely take your money and run. So what are the things you should look for to tell if you are dealing with one of those MLM scams?

First, ask if the company is more interested in bringing in new members than selling any product. After all, new members mean more competition, especially if there are not a lot of products to sell.

Also, beware of companies that want you to purchase a lot of product or inventory before you begin selling. MLM scams often require that you purchase items that are backordered, or you will purchase the items and never see them.

MLM scams often make preposterous claims about their products. The advertisements are extremely exaggerated, and if the ads sound to good to be true, they probably are. These exaggerations are most common with MLM scams that promote nutritional supplements. So check into them carefully.

Do your research before you get involved in any network marketing to avoid MLM scams. Ask a lot of questions and take your time to think about the business. If someone is pressuring you to make an instant decision, you need to put up the MLM scams red flag. However, do not be scared away from MLM, because there really are some excellent opportunities if you can make your way through the MLM scams.

I am a college business professor, and through personal experience, as well as watching countless others, I have seen how much people will risk to start up and run a traditional “brick and mortar” business. And do you know what their odds of success are? Terrible!

Nine out of ten new businesses will fail in the first year. And 95% of all businesses don’t make it to the five year mark. That means that 95% of people will have whiped out their savings accounts, mortgaged their houses and borrowed money until they are deep in debt, and struggle financially for years, working 14 hour days-- for nothing.

8 Rules for Network Marketing Success

Is success possible in network marketing (MLM)? Many say it is a rip-off. And if you talk to someone who has been burned by a bad company or sponsor, you will hear a lot of negative things. And it is true that there are bad companies out there and many distributors who are playing the "numbers game" and making quick money off new sign-ups.

But-- listen to me-- there are tons of people who are making many thousands and even millions of dollars a year in network marketing (MLM). They work for legitimate companies who make quality products and they care about their distributors who sign up with them.

Network Marketing can be a wonderful opportunity for the average person to break out from the job market rat race they are caught up in. If you can't sell, don't worry. It's not a sales business, and often good "sales people" don't do well in MLM for very long. It's really a teaching business (which is why teachers and ministers often succeed better than most in network marketing.)

I can show you the basics on how anyone can succeed in network marketing!

Start with these few simple rules:

1. Find a good company and a good sponsor.

Spend some time researching the company, the products, the distributors and the upline before you sign up. A good company, one that will support you and that matches you and your interests is hard to find. When you do find the right one, grab it and hold on with both hands.

2. Use and believe in your company's products.

Order the best products from your company that you can afford every month. If you are not doing this, you are really not willing to invest enough in your business to succeed. You need to have a personal testimony about your products and what they do for you. You can't have one if you don't even use your products. And you can't expect anyone to order them if you don't.

3. Tell everyone around you what you are excited about.

You might be surprised to find out who is interested in hearing more.

If you've been struggling in MLM for a long time and have burned out your circle of friends and family, that's OK. Let them know what you are doing, but don't bother them more than that. Let them come to you when they see you are doing well. There are many other ways to find people to talk to, so you don't really need to talk to anyone who isn't interested.

4. Commit to stay with your company and work at this as a real business.

(Do you see now why it is so important to find a great company with great products?)

Did you know that the odds of having a new traditional business succeed for 5 years are less than 95%?

But if you stay with the same network marketing company for 10 years you will have a 95% chance of reaching the highest level of your company’s compensation plan, which is usually at least $500,000 annually. That sounds like a pretty good retirement plan to me.

And that is just for the average Joe. Many hardworking distributors in my company are doing that in just a year or two.

5. And this brings us to the most important part-- Treat your MLM business as a real business.

Sorry, but there is no easy way to make money. You actually have to work at it and invest in your business. But if you do, the odds of success are in your favor.

Learn as much as you can about your business. Use the products. Use your company's marketing tools and videos. Use 3 way calls with your upline. Read books on success.

Find a mentor in the business and learn what that person is doing to succeed.

Plan for success. Write mission and vision statements. Put together a simple business plan. And work it!

6. Talk to people.

You can't get around it. To be a success in network marketing you have to tell others about the business. The Internet, events or other advertising can be used as good tools to help you find people to talk to, but in the end you have to reach them one on one, either in person or on the phone.

7. Care about others and teach them to do what you do.

Listen to people. Find out what their goals and expectations are and help those people meet them, as best you can.

This isn't a numbers game it's a people business. Those who succeed care about others and put time and energy into them. People can always tell if someone is just interested in making money and not people. If you are a caring person, this is the business for you. If you are not, you better learn to become one.

8. Believe in and support the network marketing industry.

Do you have a friend who's totally sold on another company? Or is there a company with products that you like, but you don't want to work it as a career. It's OK to sign up as a customer and support them. (And maybe you can talk that distributor into doing the same for your company and products as well.) But be honest with them and let them know you are just a customer.

**Important-- don't get distracted with trying to work several MLM businesses! That almost never works! Concentrate you efforts and energy into only one business.** (See #4- Committment.) If you get distracted easily, then skip this rule and stick with your company alone.

So, the moral of this story is that success in network marketing (MLM) is a choice. It's true that it is not for everyone. But if you really want it, you can choose to succeed at it!

I'm Just Getting Started

I just started this blog, although I should have done it ages ago. The reason I am writing it is because I am tired of hearing everyone griping about MLM and Network Marketing. I am a business professor, and I have (way too many) years of experience working in managment, sales and owning (or being owned by) my own business.

I believe that:
1) MLM is the only way a normal (or not already rich) person can have the opportunity to reach the point of true financial freedom.
2) MLM is the marketing distribution channel of the future. It is so effective that it is becoming the distribution vehicle of choice for new products and companies, and a lot of older companies are finally catching on and turning to network marketing.

It's not for everyone, and it doesn't work itself. It takes dedication and hard work to succeed. But the payoff for sticking with it and really working it like a business are phenonimal!

There are MLM scams out there giving network marketing a bad name, so you do need to be careful and find the best company you can.
